Alcad industrial batteries ensure power continuity for EQUATE Kuwait

Alcad, has supplied nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery sets to backup site systems for EQUATE Petrochemical Company, Kuwait’s first international petrochemical joint-venture.

The battery sets, based on Alcad’s latest pocket plate technology, feature H type high discharge performance and M type medium discharge performance cells. They have been installed to ensure the continuity of EQUATE’s relevant systems, including a plant substation and the control room UPS.

EQUATE was established in 1995 as an international joint venture between Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC), the Dow Chemical Company (Dow), Boubyan Petrochemical Company (BPC) and Qurain Petrochemical Industries Company (QPIC). Commencing production in 1997, EQUATE is the single operator of a fully integrated world-scale manufacturing facility producing over 5 million tons annually of high-quality petrochemical products which are marketed throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe. The products include ethylene, ethylene glycol, polyethylene, styrene monomer, polypropylene, paraxylene, heavy aromatics and benzene.

Alcad is a long standing supplier of nickel-based batteries to the Kuwaiti market, with a large presence in the utility and oil and gas sector. The new EQUATE batteries replace the previous Alcad batteries, which have been retired after a long service life in which they demonstrated excellent performance, quality and reliability.

The batteries sets delivered for EQUATE comprise 90 Alcad HP cells that provide a nominal 120 V output and the second set 176 MP cells for a 220 V output. These cells, equipped with the latest high quality active material, are ideally suited to electrical system backup applications. They offer the capability to operate under a wide range of temperatures and withstand electrical abuse, shock and vibration while providing a long service life – up to 25 years depending on the application – with simple maintenance requirements which help optimize life cycle costs.
